Forfar Loch
Partly
drained in the 18th-century, when the loch was lowered by 5m (16
feet) in depth and 1 mile (1½ km) in length Forfar Loach is situated to the
west end of the town. The loch is recovering from state of being
highly polluted from the local canning factory (now closed), the local sewage works
(now upgraded) and several industries situated on the outskirts of
the town.
The loch hold a
resident population of brown trout and some substantial pike.
Fishing is by fly only from the bank. A two trout limit is
placed on the loch on a daily basis with catch and release being
encouraged. It is hoped however all anglers will fish catch and
release for all fish caught. Those who have killed fish for the
table have indicated that the culinary qualities of the flesh
leaves much to be desired.
Dead baiting
for pike is allowed between November and February on the North
Bank only, any trout being
caught must be returned to the loch
The loch is not
currently stocked by the club and all fishing is done via the
bank. Wading in the loch while in some places is safe is not to be
advised, the bottom gas substantial 'sinks' and silted up areas.
Later in the season the weed growth hampers fishing with some
pretty slimy horrible weed fouling the flies. Life vests should be
worn when wading.
