Den Of Ogil
The 'Den' is
situated in the Grampian Hills approximately 12 miles from the
town, formerly a
water supply to local communities, it is controlled solely by the
Club.
Stocked twice
annually with brown trout it provides, in most seasons, good top of
the water fishing for trout averaging just over a pound - although
some surprises in the form of fish up to 5lbs do come along now
and again. These larger fish form part of the stocking policy -
there is insufficient food available in the loch to sustain and
grow on trout to this size.
Two distinct
forms of trout appear in the natural head of trout the the water
supports. Long lean almost finnock like trout and darker yellow
bellied fish - strangely without the red spots characteristic of
brown trout.
Fishing is by
fly only from boat or bank from the 1st April to the 30th
September.. Three boats are available on a daily basis, with keys
and visitor day tickets being available from
W.R Hardy's Gun &
Tackle shop in Forfar. Boats may be booked in advance.
Sunday evenings are popular and often boats are booked well in
advance.
The reservoir
has depths up to 60 feet in places, with the west end of the water
being the shallowest and with an increasing amount of underwater vegetation. Consequently
fishing in the rest of the loch close to the shore tends to be the most productive. There
are few times that fish cannot be seen rising to surface food
items and on occasion the water boils with fish across the whole
loch..
Small dark
flies (sizes 12 - 16), Kate Mclaren, Bibio, Black Pennel etc)
worked along the edges work well through the season with lures
also accounting for fish
There is a limit of 4
trout per angler per day (why kill them at all?) - put them back.
Note: Please
record all trout caught in the book provided in the wooden box in
the car park when you leave the water.
