Cruick Water
The Cruick (meaning 'bend in the river')
originates high in the sides on the Hill of Garbet picks up a
number of burns on it way until it joins the River Noran.
The initial few miles of this narrow burn have many small fast
streams with a number of deep pools worn our of rock and
gravel. Down stream after Afflochie farm (the point where
fishing can commence), the
river still bends and twists its way through farming land, mainly
sheep grazing. The stream has widened with fast runs and a few
pools, some of which have a fair depth.
Thirty years
ago the river held a good head of small trout - a half pound fish
was a monster, caught mainly by the 'garden fly'. However with the
availability of Rainbow fisheries, this small stream is largely
ignored by anglers - no record of any fish catch has been logged
with the club for a number of years.
There are still
trout in the burn - some of which can be seen in the pool just
above Afflochie farm.
The season for
fishing the Cruick is from the 1st April to 30th September.
